A Texas Christmas

Christmas is right around the corner, which means the best holiday events are coming up. Who can get enough of the brightly decorated houses, the hot cocoa, the songs, and just the spirit in general? We know we can’t! We’ve come up with a list of things to do in the area that we are going to share with you up to Christmas, so you can thoroughly enjoy the holiday in our neck of the woods!

We’ll start with Austin, which is only about an hour drive away.

Armadillo Bazaar is an annual Austin favorite. All kinds of vendors get together to bring guests a unique holiday shopping experience. It’s the perfect place to get last minute gifts, or to find something for that one person in your life who is always hard to shop for. You can even enjoy a Poinsettia while browsing the selections, or another tasty beverage of your choice. Several of Austin’s talented musicians will be showcased during the bazaar. It really is a great time!

Go ice skating in Texas. You don’t believe us that you can? Austin’s Whole Foods hosts an evening of ice skating on the roof! Skating on the Plaza will be back on Nov. 29. Rent out the rink for a private party, or go and join the rest of the community as they skate on days that the rink is open. View their website for schedule information. The schedule is subject to change and the rink is always open to the public Friday evenings and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

The annual Zilker Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 29. Vendors will be on site with food, beverages, and novelties, and live entertainment will be featured. The tree lighting ceremony is the prequel to Austin’s Trail of Lights and gets everybody incredibly excited for the holiday season. This is a must attend if you’re in the area. The tree will be on display from Nov. 30 to Dec. 21, nightly.

Along with the Zilker Tree Lighting, the Trail of Lights is another huge Austin Christmas Tradition. Beginning Dec. 8 and running through the 22, the Trail of Lights is a wonderful family event. Walk through Zilker Park and see the various holiday scenes, including Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella, and more. You can even get a little shopping done there as there will be vendors in certain areas of the walk. And don’t worry if it’s a little chilly out, there will be plenty of hot cocoa to go around. If you go at the right time, you might even see a famous face or two as Austin is home to several celebrities. Plan ahead, though, as parking can get a little crazy!
